Tällä historiikilla juhlistetaan Alue- ja Ympäristötutkimuksen seuran 50-vuotisjuhlaa. Historiikissa kuvaillaan Alue- ja ympäristötutkimuksen seuran elämänkaarta aina vuoden 1990 käänteentekevään yleiskokoukseen ja siitä edelleen nykypäivään saakka. Aineistona on käytetty Alue ja Ympäristö-julkaisun aiempien numeroiden katsauksia, haastatteluja entisiltä AYS:n johtokunnan jäseniltä sekä tietoa suunnittelumaantieteen ja aluetutkimuksen historiasta Suomessa. Lopuksi historiikissa luodaan myös katsetta tulevaan käsittelemällä seuran tavoitteita ja tulevia tapahtumia.
