Abstrakti

Yhä suurempi osa iäkkäistä elää pidempään kotonaan. Paikallaan ikääntyminen aiheuttaa kuitenkin haasteita esimerkiksi lähiöissä asuville ikääntyneille. Tässä artikkelissa puhun staattisen paikallaan ikääntymisen sijaan paikassa ikääntymisestä, mikä ottaa huomioon ikääntyneiden ja ympäristön väliset vuorovaikutussuhteet. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan turkulaista Varissuon lähiötä paikassa ikääntymisen affektiivisena tilana. Tunteet, emootiot ja affektit vaikuttavat siihen, millaiseksi näkemyksemme jostain paikasta muodostuu. Tässä artikkelissa kiinnitetään huomiota erityisesti affekteihin, joiden voidaan katsoa olevan sosiaalisissa tilanteissa jaettuja, kollektiivisia ja eteenpäin työntäviä.

Artikkelia varten haastateltiin 20 henkilöä Varissuolla. Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, että affekteilla on merkitystä siinä, miten ikääntyneet käyttävät ja tuottavat lähiötilaa, ja tätä kautta myös mielekkääseen paikassa ikääntymiseen. Affekteista pelko sääntelee lähiötilan käyttöä tiettyinä vuoden- ja vuorokaudenaikoina. Huoli palveluista, joko niiden muutoksesta tai puutteesta, nostatti kollektiivista ärtymystä mutta myös tahtoa puuttua asioihin konkreettisin toimenpitein. Yhteisöllisyyden tunne voi auttaa paikkaan kiinnittymistä, mutta se voidaan kokea myös negatiivisena yhteisön ulkopuolelta. Monet asukkaat olivat eläneet alueella jo pitkään, jolloin he kokivat juurtuneensa alueeseen. Erilaiset muutokset saattoivat kuitenkin aiheuttaa negatiivisia tunteita ja korostivat nostalgisuutta ikääntyneiden keskuudessa. Myös nostalgisuus saattaa olla liikkeelle sysäävä tai vastaavasti uudistuksia estävä affekti. Varissuon maine ns. ongelmalähiönä herätti asukkaissa tarpeen puolustaa asuinaluettaan. Tutkimus osoitti myös, miten lähiöihin liittyvillä poliittisilla päätöksillä on merkitystä sekä affektien herättäjänä että paikassa ikääntymiseen.
