Alue ja Ympäristö [Region & Environment] is a multidisciplinary scientific journal published by the Finnish Society for Regional and Environmental Research, together with the Finnish Society for Environmental Social Science. The journal is the main forum for Finnish regional studies and environmental social science research and it publishes widely critical, theoretically motivated research in human geography, regional studies, environmental social sciences, and environmental humanities. The journal has been published regularly since 1971, for the first 20 years under the name Aluesuunnittelu and since 1991 under its current name.
Alue ja Ympäristö is a Finnish-language journal, but we welcome contributions that connect to Finnish scientific discussion in Swedish and also case-by-case in English. The journal publishes peer-reviewed articles and reviews, as well as a wide variety of other writings, such as lectures, book reviews and more free-form epiphyte texts. We welcome empirical case studies as well as theoretical and methodological contributions. Manuscripts are submitted via this portal. The journal follows double-blind review: peer-reviewed articles and reviews are evaluated by two experts on the field of research without disclosing the author's or the reviewer's identities.
Alue ja Ympäristö journal is published twice a year. The first issue comes out in June and contains contributions broadly in the fields of regional studies and encironmental social sciences. The second issue of the year is a theme issue and a separate call for contributions is published at least a year in advance. The theme issues are usually edited by guest editors with the support of the journal's editors. If you are interested in editing a theme issue, get in contact with the journal editors. A theme issue may be multilingual.
Alue ja Ympäristö is published openly and freely as an electronic journal on the Journal.fi platform. Also a printed version is published and can be subscribed via the Finnish Society of Regional and Environmental Research (in Finnish) or bought as separate issues from Tiedekirja. Alue ja Ympäristö journal applies immediate open publishing: articles and other contributions can be published online as soon as they are ready after the editorial process and at this point they can be already referred to. Also the pre-published texts are included in the journal issues published twice a year.
The earlier issues of the journal are available in this portal since 2/2005.
Alue ja Ympäristö follows the peer review code of conduct by the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies as well as the peer review guidelines by Finnish Association for Scholarly Publishing and the Responsible conduct of research guidelines by the Finnish Advisory Board on Research Integrity.

Alue ja Ympäristö on kaksi kertaa vuodessa ilmestyvä monitieteinen aikakauslehti, jota julkaisevat Alue- ja ympäristötutkimuksen seura ry sekä Yhteiskuntatieteellisen ympäristötutkimuksen seura ry. Lehti on tärkein suomalaisen aluetieteen ja yhteiskuntatieteellisen ympäristötutkimuksen foorumi.
