Abstract

In the context of sustainability transitions needed to resolve the ecological crisis, there has been an increasing demand for social justice in the transition. A just transition means making social justice a key part of solving the environmental crisis. At the same time, the emphasis on fairness carries the risk of slowing down the resolution of the environmental crisis. Especially if justice becomes understood as the right to maintain unsustainable lifestyles and social structures supporting them. In this review, we critically examine just transition against the background of environmental policy and the welfare state and highlight the idea of ecological solidarity as a complementary concept to fairness. The transition to sustainability is a real opportunity to combine ecological, social and economic sustainability in a new way and thereby also to develop an ecological welfare state. However, this requires that the ecological dimension of the transformation is raised as a central part of the understanding of justice. Then well-being is extended to non-human nature and solidarity with the vulnerable includes both nature and people. In this way, a fair eco-welfare state can gain broader visions of the future for truly ecologically sustainable well-being.
