This article brings together various strands of critical study of food and hunger issues in order to foster discussion of a better food system. The dominant productivist paradigm is based on a simplistic analysis of the nature of hunger as merely lack of food and seeing increasing production as the main solution. This approach is clearly problematic in the era of increasing environmental problems and enduring hunger and food security.
The article examines the problems of dominant ways of measuring hunger and the productionist policy proposals. Food security perspective and food system approach are used to examine the problems of current food system and discuss ways forward towards a more sustainable and equitable one, capable of overcoming hunger and fostering food security.
